Cheap tools cost more: rounded bolt heads, broken sockets and injured hands add up fast in a maintenance workshop. Here is what separates industrial hand tools that last from ones that don't.

Materials matter

• Chrome vanadium (Cr-V) steel is the common choice for quality spanners, sockets and wrenches — strong, tough and resistant to wear.
• S2 steel is widely used for screwdriver bits because it is hard yet tough enough to resist snapping.
• A good chrome or anti-corrosion finish protects tools in humid and coastal conditions.

Choosing the right spanner

• Combination spanners — an open end and a ring end of the same size; the everyday workhorse.
• Open-ended spanners — quick to fit over nuts on pipes and lines, but grip only two flats, so they can round off tight fasteners.
• Ring spanners — grip six or twelve points for high torque without slipping.
• Adjustable wrenches — one tool for many sizes; handy, but less secure than a correctly sized spanner.

Check whether your equipment uses metric or imperial fasteners — older and imported machinery often mixes both.

When specialist tools are essential

• Non-sparking tools are made from alloys such as aluminium bronze or beryllium copper. Use them where flammable gases, vapours or dust are present — fuel depots, gas facilities and some chemical and mining sites — because steel striking steel can create an igniting spark.
• Insulated VDE tools marked 1000 V are tested for live working under IEC 60900. Electricians working near energised parts should use nothing less.
• Torque wrenches are non-negotiable wherever a manufacturer specifies a tightening torque — engines, wheels, flanges and structural bolts. Over-tightening stretches and breaks fasteners; under-tightening lets joints loosen or leak.

Buying for a team
